Connah’s Quay Nomads 2-2 The New Saints
The Deeside Stadium
Connah’s Quay Scorers: Jay Owen 31’, Callum Morris 53’
The New Saints’ Scorer: Greg Draper 29’, 44’
Fixtures between these two heavyweights do not disappoint, as a general rule, and tonight’s iteration certainly didn’t as four goals were scored and The Nomads came from behind twice to match The JD Welsh Premier League Champions on the night at The Deeside Stadium.
Whilst it took The New Saints just under half an hour to make an impact on the scoreboard, it was in fact the home side who went closest to scoring in the earlier phases of the game as Ryan Wignall – who had a great game overall – struck the crossbar with a looping effort after five minutes of play, and Mathias Bakare had another effort blocked on the line after he struck a Callum Morris cutback goal-bound.
The Nomads’ lack of a clinical edge in front of goal looked like it was going to come back to haunt them soon afterwards, however, as Greg Draper rounded John Danby with 29 minutes played to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Jay Owen, however – an embodiment of everything The Nomads do well with his positive attitude and style of play – had something to say about that, and brought The Nomads level moments later to make it 1-1.
A crazy first half took another turn late-on as Draper bagged his brace, capitalising on a mistake from Danby to give the visitors a one-goal lead going into the break, much to the dismay of the home side who had made such an excellent start to the game. Their other in-form midfielder, Callum Morris, did what very few do better than him after 53 minutes and tucked away a penalty to make it 2-2 and set up a tense finish to the game, with both sides desperate to secure a crucial three points, but neither could break the parity and the score finished at 2-2.
